Billy Goat Bluff Track

Hema Maps Grading: Difficult

Arguably one of the most iconic (and steepest) 4x4 tracks in the state, Billy Goat Bluff is listed as one of the most challenging in the country. Ascending 1,200 metres in only 7 kilometres, you'll need a keen sense of adventure to tackle the narrow path edged with cliff faces. Offering incredible views and a mixture of driving conditions; including steep grades and rocky sections, it is well worth the drive. Read the Hema Maps Billy Goat Bluff Guide.

Day Two: Horseyard Flat Hut to Wonnangatta Station

Via Zeka Spur Track

After breakfast we said goodbye to Horseyard Flat Hut and set out for Zeka Spur and the isolated Wonnangatta Station, where camped for our second night. Along the way we visited the spectacular Dimmicks Lookout and then walked the magical hiking trail to Pieman Falls.

Route

Travel Time from Horseyard Flat Hut to Wonnangatta Station via Zeka Spur: 2 hours 59 minutes

Follow Moroka Rd until you reach Arbuckle Junction, then turn right onto Howitt Rd. Follow Howitt Rd until you meet the iconic Zeka Spur Tk. Follow Zeka Spur down into the valley. Take The Wonnagatta Tk to the right and follow into the valley and camping area.

Zeka Spur Track

4x4 Earth Grading: Moderate

As the most popular route into the Wonnangatta Valley, Zeka Spur offers a spectacular descent into the infamous and secluded station. With plenty of sharp turns and washouts, it takes approximately 2.5 hours to complete due to the challenging nature of the descent. You can read more about the track on 4x4 Earth.

Wonnangatta Station

The remote Wonnangatta Station is rich in both beauty and history, with many site remains, ruins and walking tracks to explore. The old cemetery and burnt remains of the main homestead tell the story of struggle and isolation of those who lived there.

You can find out about the lives of those who lived and work there, included two men who ran the station that were found murdered in 1918 here. The murders to this day have never been solved.

via Herne Spur Track

After one last exploration around the homestead ruins, we left the scenic Wonnangatta Valley and tackled the difficult Herne Spur Track and trekked into Crooked River.

Route

Travel Time from Wonangatta Station to Crooked River: 1 hour 53 minutes

Take Wonnangatta Tk out of the valley and follow until you reach the iconic Herne Spur Tk. Follow until you reach Cynthia Range Tk. When Cynthia Range Tk splits into two, take the track to the left until you reach Crooked River Tk. Find a campsite for the night along here.

Herne Spur Track

4x4 Earth Grading: Very Difficult

Beginning near the picturesque Wonnangatta Station, the track takes you through 8 river crossings and up some of the steepest terrain in the Victorian High Country. Many sections of the track are steep, loose and rocky. You can read more about the track on 4x4 Earth.
