We set off in the trusty Isuzu D-Max on an overnight camping trip to a lesser known gem in the Victorian High Country! While it’s not a place you’d seek out for epic Victorian 4wd tracks, the snow gums and the eucalypt forests of the Nunniong State Forest are worth the visit. The grassy high plains are home to beautiful high country brumbies, and there’s plenty of fishing, horse riding, bushwalking, trial bike riding and high country hut exploring to do. Switching our Isuzu D-Max for our (somewhat!) trusty legs, we travel into the Victorian High Country for an overnight Mount Howitt hike. Starting from the carpark on Howitt Road, we hiked 5km through snow gums and snow grass plains to reach the Macalister Springs campground where we set up camp for the night. The campground features the striking Vallejo Gantner Memorial Hut, a natural spring to top up your drinking water and the infamous ‘Loo with a View’! While answering the call of nature, you get sweeping views of the valleys - a one of a kind experience! We then tackled the 4km return hike to the Mount Howitt Summit, where we were treated with some spectacular views of the Victorian High Country, and spent the night camping from our backpacks. The next morning we hiked back to the car, where we headed off to spend the next 2 nights at Wonnangatta Station and Macalister River. Unfortunately we had some technical difficulties with our SD cards and lost all of our GoPro footage, but we hope you enjoy the spectacular scenery captured on our drone.
